osCommerce was started in March 2000 in Germany by project founder and leader Harald Ponce de Leon as The Exchange Project. As of August 2008 the osCommerce site says that there are over 14,000 'live' websites using the program. This number is almost certainly conservative, given the inclusion of osCommerce in hosting panel application installers such as Fantastico (web hosting) and its dependency on osCommerce users linking their sites into the osCommerce Live Stores listings.

In November 2010 the development of osCommerce v2.2 was met with another stable release. Version 2.3, as it was branded, takes advantage of the benefits of Tableless web design, and includes a number of social networking tools.

Version 3.0 has been released on March 31, 2011 and is a major re-write of the program to incorporate an object-oriented backend, a template system to allow easy layout changes, and inclusion of an administration-area username and password definition during installation. The latest version is 3.0.2, and was released on 6 August 2011.

osCommerce is absolutely free under the GNU General Public License and caters very well to most people’s needs. Unsurprisingly, considering how easy it is to set up and run, it’s extremely popular, powering over 228,700 online stores. Such popularity does come with a significant downside however- it makes it harder for you to differentiate your store from the thousands of others out there. If you want to stand out from the crowd, you’re going to need to use some of the 5,800 add-ons available, some of which cost money.

Movable Type is a weblog publishing system developed by the company Six Apart. It was publicly announced on September 3, 2001; version 1.0 was publicly released on October 8, 2001. On 12 December 2007, Movable Type was relicensed as free software under the GNU General Public License.The current version is 5.2.3.

DokuWiki is a standards-compliant, simple to use wiki optimized for creating documentation. It is targeted at developer teams, workgroups, and small companies. All data is stored in plain text files, so no database is required.

MediaWiki is a wiki package originally written for Wikipedia. MediaWiki is an extremely powerful, scalable software and a feature-rich wiki implementation.

MediaWiki is a free wiki software application. Developed by the Wikimedia Foundation and others, it is used to run all of the projects hosted by the Foundation, including Wikipedia, Wiktionary and Commons. Numerous other wikis around the world also use it to power their websites. It is written in the PHP programming language and uses a backend database. The software's code is structured functionally.


The first version of the software was deployed to serve the needs of the free content Wikipedia encyclopedia in 2002. It has been deployed since then by many companies as a content management system for internal knowledge management. Notably, Novell uses it to operate several of its high-traffic websites. Thousands of websites use MediaWiki. Some educators have also assigned students to use MediaWiki for collaborative group projects.

The software is optimized to correctly and efficiently handle projects of all sizes, including the largest wikis, which can have terabytes of content and hundreds of thousands of hits per second. Because Wikipedia is one of the world's largest websites, achieving scalability through multiple layers of caching and database replication has also been a major concern for developers. Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects continue to define a large part of the requirement set for MediaWiki.

The software is highly customizable, with more than 700 configuration settings and more than 1,800 extensions available for enabling various features to be added or changed. Only on Wikipedia, more than 1000 automated and semi-automated bots and other tools have been developed to assist in editing MediaWiki sites.

MediaWiki is free and open source software and is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License version 2 or any later version while its documentation is released under the Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0 license and partly in the public domain. Specifically, the manuals and other content at MediaWiki.org are Creative Commons-licensed, while the set of help pages intended to be freely copied into fresh wiki installations and/or distributed with MediaWiki software is public domain. This was done to eliminate legal issues arising from the help pages being imported into wikis with licenses that are incompatible with the Creative Commons license. MediaWiki development has generally favored the use of open-source media formats.
Development

MediaWiki has an active volunteer community for development and maintenance. Users who have made meaningful contributions to the project by submitting patches are generally, upon request, granted access to commit revisions to the project's Apache Subversion and now Git/Gerrit repository.There is also a small group of paid programmers who primarily develop projects for the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikimedia participates in the Google Summer of Code by facilitating the assignment of mentors to students wishing to work on MediaWiki core and extension projects. As of early November 2012, there were about two hundred developers who had committed changes to the MediaWiki core or extensions within the past year. Major MediaWiki releases are generated approximately every three to eight months by taking snapshots of the development trunk, which is kept continuously in a runnable state; minor releases, or point releases, are issued as needed to correct bugs (especially security problems).

MediaWiki has a public bug tracker, bugzilla.wikimedia.org, which runs Bugzilla. The site is also used for feature and enhancements requests.

Subversion enables globally distributed software development teams to efficiently version and share source code. It includes versioned directories, atomic commits, efficient handling of binary files, quick branching and tagging, directory and file metadata and has low administrative overhead.

Apache Subversion (often abbreviated SVN, after the command name svn) is a software versioning and revision control system distributed under an open source license. Developers use Subversion to maintain current and historical versions of files such as source code, web pages, and documentation. Its goal is to be a mostly compatible successor to the widely used Concurrent Versions System (CVS).

The open source community has used Subversion widely: for example in projects such as Apache Software Foundation, Free Pascal, FreeBSD, GCC, Mono and SourceForge. Google Code also provides Subversion hosting for their open source projects. CodePlex offers access to Subversion as well as to other types of clients.

The corporate world has also started to adopt Subversion. A 2007 report by Forrester Research recognized Subversion as the sole leader in the Standalone Software Configuration Management (SCM) category and as a strong performer in the Software Configuration and Change Management (SCCM) category.

Subversion was created by CollabNet Inc. in 2000, and is now a top-level Apache project being built and used by a global community of contributors.

Repository types
Subversion offers two types of repository storage.

Berkeley DB
The original development of Subversion used the Berkeley DB package. Subversion has some limitations with Berkeley DB usage when a program that accesses the database crashes or terminates forcibly. No data loss or corruption occurs, but the repository remains offline while Berkeley DB replays the journal and cleans up any outstanding locks. The safest way to use Subversion with a Berkeley DB repository involves a single server-process running as one user (instead of through a shared filesystem).
 
FSFS
In 2004, a new storage subsystem was developed and named FSFS. It works faster (than the Berkeley DB backend) on directories with a large number of files and takes less disk space, due to less logging.

Beginning with Subversion 1.2, FSFS became the default data store for new repositories.

The etymology of "FSFS" is based on Subversion's use of the term "filesystem" for its repository storage system. FSFS stores its contents directly within the operating system's filesystem, rather than a structured system like Berkeley DB. Thus, it is a "[Subversion] FileSystem atop the FileSystem".
Repository access

Access to Subversion repositories can take place by:
  • Local filesystem or network filesystem, accessed by client directly. This mode uses the file:///path access scheme.
  • WebDAV/Delta-V (over http or https) using the mod_dav_svn module for Apache 2. This mode uses the http://host/path access scheme or https://host/path for secure connections using ssl.
  • Custom "svn" protocol (default port 3690), using plain text or over TCP/IP. This mode uses either the svn://host/path access scheme for unencrypted transport or svn+ssh://host/path scheme for tunneling over ssh.
All three means can access both FSFS and Berkeley DB repositories.

Any 1.x version of a client can work with any 1.x server. Newer clients and servers have additional features and performance capabilities, but have fallback support for older clients/servers.
Gitorious provides an open source infrastructure for hosting projects that use Git. It also supports projects with wikis, a web interface for merge requests and code reviews and activity timelines for projects and developers.

Gitorious is a Web site hosting collaborative open source projects using the Git distributed revision control system. The name also refers to the server software that the Web site is developed and hosted on. According to the Git User's Survey in 2011, Gitorious is the second most popular hosting service for Git, with 11.7% of respondents indicating they use it, behind 87.5% using GitHub.

Limitations and Constraints
According to the terms of service, if bandwidth usage for an account, project or repository exceeds 500 MB/month, or significantly exceeds the average bandwidth usage of other Gitorious.org users or customers, Gitorious.org reserve the right to immediately disable or throttle the account, project or repository until the account owner can reduce the bandwidth consumption.

Pootle is a user-friendly web portal for translation projects. It allows online translation, work assignment, gives statistics and makes it easy for volunteers to contribute. Pootle, your server software that enables crowd-sourced localizations.

Pootle is an online translation management tool with translation interface. It is written in the Python programming language using the Django framework and is free software originally developed and released by Translate.org.za[1] in 2004. It was further developed as part of the WordForge project and the African Network for Localisation and is now maintained by Translate.org.za.


Pootle is intended for use by free software translators, but it is usable in other situations. Its main focus is on localization of applications' graphical user interfaces as opposed to document translation. Pootle makes use of the Translate Toolkit for manipulating translation files. The Translate Toolkit also offers offline features that can be used to manage the translation of Mozilla Firefox and OpenOffice.org in Pootle. Some of Pootle's features include terminology extraction, translation memory, glossary management and matching, goal creation and user management.

It can play various roles in the translation process. The simplest displays statistics for the body of translations hosted by the server. Its suggestion mode allows users to make translation suggestions and corrections for later review, thus it can act as a translation specific bug reporting system. It allows online translation with various translators and lastly it can operate as a management system where translators translate using an offline tool and use Pootle to manage the workflow of the translation.

The Translate Toolkit provides conversion from its supported source document formats which include: Java and Mozilla .properties files, OpenOffice.org SDF files, HTML, Text, XLIFF and Gettext PO.

Pootle itself works directly on Gettext PO and XLIFF files, as well as Qt .ts, TBX and TMX (since version 2.0.3). Since Pootle 2.1.0 there is also native support for several other formats, such as Java .properties files, PHP array files, Mac OS X strings and several subtitle formats.

Pootle was designed to be a web translation tool using the Translate Toolkit. It serves as a translation management system, treating translation files as documents and managing them as such.

The aim of Pootle is never to replace existing processes but rather to enhance them. Thus it interacts with upstream version control systems allowing it to commit changes directly to the main project rather than maintaining a parallel system outside of the project.

It is free software and projects are encouraged to host their own Pootle server to allow their community to localise.
Weblate is a translation tool with tight Git integration. It features include a simple and clean user interface, propagation of translations across subprojects, consistency checks and automatic linking to source files.

Weblate is built on expectation that translations should closely follow software development and translators should be properly credited in version control system.

LimeSurvey (formerly PHPSurveyor) is a free and open source online survey application written in PHP based on a MySQL, PostgreSQL or MSSQL database, distributed under the GNU General Public License. Designed for ease of use, it enables users to develop and publish surveys, and collect responses, without doing any programming.


LimeSurvey is a web application that is installed to the user’s server. After installation users can manage LimeSurvey from a web-interface. Users can use rich text in questions and messages, using a rich text editor, and images and videos can be integrated into the survey. The layout and design of the survey can be changed by modifying the template. Templates can be changed in a WYSIWYG HTML editor. Additionally, templates can be imported and exported through the template editor. Once a survey is finalized, the user can activate it, making it available for respondents to view and answer. Likewise, questions can also be imported and exported through the editor interface. LimeSurvey has no limit on the number of surveys a user can create, nor is there a limit on how many participants can respond. Aside from technical and practical constraints, there is also no limit on the number of questions each survey may have.

Questions are added in groups. The questions within each group are organized on the same page. Surveys can include a variety of question types that take many response formats, including multiple choice, text input, drop-down lists, numerical input, slider input, and simple yes/no input. Questions can be arranged in a two-dimensional array, with options along one axis based on the questions on the other axis. Questions can depend on the results of other questions. For instance, a respondent might only be asked about transportation for his or her commute if he or she responded affirmatively to a question about having a job.

LimeSurvey also provides basic statistical and graphical analysis of survey results. Surveys can either be publicly accessible or be strictly controlled through the use of "once-only" tokens, granted only to selected participants. Additionally, participants can be anonymous, or LimeSurvey can track the IP addresses of the participants. A much more detailed listing of features can be found on the LimeSurvey web page.

LimeSurvey in general uses the UTF-8 character set to be able to display all languages. Both the frontend and backend of LimeSurvey are available in 60 languages and dialects; 22 of these have over 95% of the translations done. Gallery is an open source project enabling management and publication of digital photographs and other media through a PHP-enabled web server. Photo manipulation includes automatic thumbnails, resizing, rotation, and flipping, among other things. Albums can be organized hierarchically and individually controlled by administrators or privileged users.

Gallery 3 is the current release of Gallery. It is a complete rewrite of Gallery 2 attempting to be small, intuitive, fast, and easily customizable. Gallery 3.0 was released on October 5, 2010.

Gallery 2 was publicly released on September 13, 2005. Gallery 2.3.1 was a minor release, primarily for supporting PHP 5.3 and was released on Dec 17, 2009. Development of Gallery 2.x has ceased.

Gallery 1 was released in April 2001 and was developed for several years, the last release being 1.5.10 on November 21, 2008. Development of further Gallery 1.x versions might continue in project Jallery, a fork of Gallery 1.6, but does not seem to be under active development.

Gallery has also released a "Gallery Virtual Appliance", which allows users to test the current versions of both Gallery 1 and Gallery 2. in a VMWare installation.

Gallery participated in the Google Summer of Code in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Gallery also participated in OpenUsability's Season of Usability in 2008 and 2009.

In 2003, Gallery was SourceForge's October Project of the Month.

Originally developed using CVS, Gallery switched to SourceForge's Subversion Service on April 27, 2006 and Gallery 3 has been developed entirely using Git on Github.

ownCloud is a software suite that provides a location-independent storage area for data (cloud storage). The versioning support for files is improved with an intelligent algorithm that automatically expires old version if running out of space. The versioning keeps revisions every 2 seconds for the first 10 seconds, every 10 seconds for the next minute, every minue for the next hour, every hour for the nex 24 hours and one revision per day until running out of space or quota.

Contacts
Contacts are now organized by groups (categories) instead of address books giving more intuitive access to Friends, Coworkers, Family etc. The main view shows an overview of the most relevant fields and the amount of info adjusts automatically depending the size of the browser window or device.
